Arduino Bicycle (Collaboration with Marius Indrei and Ken Blaznek) - Watch Video

This video is the final product of a project focusing on physical computing and effective use of the Arduino board. There are three different sensors on the bicycle: a photocell placed on the rear wheel returns the speed at which the wheel is spinning and dictates how fast the video on the computer plays back, a bend sensor detects whether or not the user is pedaling and changes the type of sounds in the video, a proximity sensor detects how close the front wheel is to the wall and allows the user to change the volume of the sound by turning the wheel.

Fantasy Sports: Quick View
Concept & Prototype

The Fantasy Sports Quick View is a concept and prototype for a simple and visual system used to track the performance of professional athletes in regard to online fantasy sports leagues. Based on the scale and quantity of icons a user can quickly determine which players are doing well and which are doing poorly. Using the key, a user may also determine more precise statistics for their players. The system would exist online in conjunction to more traditional column and row displays for statistics.

Typefaces
Digital Files

These three typefaces were designed in conjuction with projects requiring a unique typographic solution. ARL-Geo Display is based on a modular system where each letter form is constructed using five base forms. 4/9 Display is based on strong and simple forms with replacable serifs. Feather Display is an abstracted reference to the paper turkeys we all made in grade school, the colors are also based on the standard colors of construction paper.

Money is Time

Money is Time represents an intensive week of documenting every moment and action of my waking life. The resolution of the poster compares the idea of spending time in the same manner as you would spend money. Each fan of money represents one day of the week and the amount of each bill showing represents the time spent doing that activity.

An Analysis of Objectual Genealogy
Poster: 28” x 63”, Book: 4.25” x 6”, 184 pgs, Hand-Sewn Binding, B&W / Color Laser Prints, Wood, Paint & Doorknob

Objectual genealogy is the study and tracing of lines of direct physical contact with any object. By keeping a precise record of those who come into contact with an article it is quite easy to create an accurate genealogical record for any inanimate object. Using this data it is possible to trace a direct physical link between countless strangers through momentary contact with the item in question. This project displays a precise six hour record of people who came in contact with a common doorknob.

Production Schedule
32” x 32”, Breaks Down in to 17 Pieces, Oversize Color Print

This reinterpretation of a television production schedule combines the multiple pieces of essential documentation into one coherent piece of information. The full size schedule is meant to be divided into seventeen pieces and distributed as fit. At the close of shooting the seventeen pieces will be reunited so all pertinent information will be available as one document. The color coding allows the user to quickly identify the specific piece of information they are looking for.

Cell Phones are People Too

Cell Phones are People Too is a web application designed to help people think about the waste involved in purchasing a new cell phone every one or two years. The user interacts with the site through SMS messages in real time. Each unique phone number creates a creature specific to that phone, allowing the user to empathize with their phone as a living creature rather than an inanimate commodity.

Uniwidth Marconi
Display Poster: 26” x 44”, Specimen: 11” x 17”, Oversize Color Prints

The display face Uniwidth Marconi represents the spread of ideas through a community or society in the form of words. The initial idea came from comparing the progression of an idea to the progression of an infectious disease, but the final solution also references similarities to radio waves and the possibility of physical illness as a result of optical illusion.

Detroit Artist's Market: Identity System
Mark, Letterhead (and Second Page), Business Card, #10 & Catalog Envelope, Color Laser Prints on Canson Paper

The Detroit Artist’s Market identity system is based on the ideas of foundation and structure. Like a skeletal system, the Artist’s Market lays the framework for a community of Detroit based artists. The mark abstractly references a vertebrae while the strong lines and layers of color give a sense of structure and rigidity.

Detroit Public Library: Identity System & Style Guide
12.75” x 16”, 60 pgs, Hand-Sewn Binding, B&W Laser Prints with Color Laser Inserts

The Detroit Public Library’s identity system is a graphic and conceptual representation of reflection. A four by six grid is a literal depiction of the 24 library branches located around Detroit, and is used to create a mark that is representative of the Detroit Public Library as a cohesive organization. Each module of the grid contains a unique iteration of the mark and further reinforces the fact that the library is not one single entity, but a structure made of many integral parts. The complete system consists of three different templates and a logotype for creating the mark, a letterhead, catalog and #10 envelope, business cards, signage system, library card, book bag, and two templates for posters.
